Amar Wadode, 100% visually impaired, overcame barriers through the GASVS CBR program, becoming a teacher, advocate, and inspiration—showing that community support and determination can transform lives and empower others.
Amar Wadode, a 30-year-old from Koprawadi, Maharashtra, has never let his 100% visual impairment define his limits. Today, he is a respected computer teacher at Deep Stambh Foundation, a role model for persons with disabilities (PwDs), and a passionate advocate for empowerment and inclusion. Amar’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative impact of the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program led by GASVS.
Identified in 2007 at the age of 13 by the CBR team, Amar was born with low vision that worsened with time. The CBR program quickly enrolled him, helping him gain a disability certificate and access to the Disability Pension Scheme. By 2009, GASVS had established the Village Level Disabled Persons Organization (VDPO) to empower local communities. Initially represented by his father, Amar actively took part in every activity, demonstrating exceptional leadership.
In 2012, upon adulthood, Amar officially joined the VDPO and rose to become treasurer of the Chetna Block Level DPO, advocating for the rights of PwDs and building strong networks with government authorities and other organizations. His leadership shone even brighter in 2015 when he was recommended for the post of treasurer in the North Region DPO, and he later became a member of the National Level DPO promoted by Caritas India, expanding the scale of his impact.
Supported by GASVS, Amar completed a three-month course in Bangalore in 2018, honing his communication, computer, and English skills. Returning to his village, he started teaching at a private school. Even after losing his sight completely in 2021, Amar adapted by launching an online English coaching program for students with disabilities. His classes, with special concessions for disabled students, quickly drew over fifty participants, affirming his commitment to education and social inclusion.
In 2022, Amar reached new heights as a member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committees, where he advocates for accessible railway facilities and pass benefits for PwDs. Presently, Amar teaches computers at the Deep Stambh Foundation, earning INR 6,000 per month, and continues to actively champion the rights of PwDs in multiple forums. His tech-savvy nature, comfort with mobile and social media, and tireless advocacy make him an influential voice for community-led change.
Amar’s story embodies the power of individual determination amplified by supportive community programs. He states, “If the organization had not existed, I would never have been able to move forward in life. Whatever change has come in my life has been possible only because of the organization.” Amar Wadode stands out as a role model, proving that with the right environment and support, persons with disabilities can achieve remarkable success and inspire many others.
